Editor’s Note: This is the second in a series of posts exploring the results of the first cycle of school inspections by the Cayman Islands Office of Education Standards.
The Office of Education Standards has concluded its first cycle of inspections of Cayman Islands schools, which began in 2018. In total, inspectors issued reports on 53 public and private schools.
Inspectors rate schools in 18 individual categories, using a scale of Weak/Satisfactory/Good/Excellent. The overall grade is determined according to the individual scores.
There are 26 schools in Cayman that offer primary education, including 12 public schools.
This infographic created by the Cayman Current shows the primary schools’ results in all 18 individual categories, as well as the overall school rating, and also includes links to the individual schools’ inspection reports. (You can find the reports for all 53 schools here.)
Of the 26 primary schools, 8 were rated ‘Good’ — Cayman Academy, Cayman International School (CIS), Cayman Prep & High School, Footsteps, Hope Academy, Island Montessori*, Lighthouse School and Montessori by the Sea.
Five schools were rated ‘Weak’ — Calvary Baptist Christian Academy, Savannah Primary School, Triple C School, Truth for Youth and Wesleyan Christian Academy.
Note: This analysis includes education at the ‘primary’ level, or generally Years 1-6. It does not include Early Years, Middle School or High School. One school, Starfish Village/Village Montessori, is not included because at the time of inspection its primary programme was very new. Additionally, this only includes the initial ‘full inspection’ reports, and does not consider the results of follow-through inspections where schools were assessed on their progress toward implementing inspectors’ recommendations.
Only 1 school received ‘Excellent’ marks in students’ attainment in Mathematics and Science — Cayman International School (CIS).
No schools received ‘Excellent’ marks for students’ attainment in English.
CIS received an ‘Excellent’ rating for Staff and the Learning Environment.
CIS, along with Footsteps, received an ‘Excellent’ rating for Curriculum.
One school, Island Montessori, received and ‘Excellent’ rating for Health and Safety.
Except for Lighthouse School, no public school achieved above a ‘Satisfactory’ rating in categories related to students’ attainment or progress in the three core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science.
*Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story and graphic inadvertently omitted Island Montessori. If you see anything that needs to be corrected in a story, graphic, or any Current content, please don’t hesitate to let us know by email or social media.*
