Layman E. Scott Sr. High School
Layman E. Scott Sr. High School on Cayman Brac improved its rating to ‘Good’ during its last inspection, making it the third public school to meet national expected standards.
Further, the secondary school earned ‘Good’ ratings in all 18 individual areas of assessment.
According to the Office of Education Standards report, “Leadership was effective and senior leaders were respected by the school community which accounted for the many improvements in the performance standards at this inspection.”
Layman Scott received a 'Satisfactory' rating in its last inspection in October 2018.
Inspectors grade schools on a 4-point scale, 'Weak', 'Satisfactory', 'Good' and 'Excellent'. The minimum standard of quality in all Cayman Islands schools is 'Satisfactory'. The expected standard of quality is 'Good'.
Layman Scott improved its rating in 14 out of 18 individual areas.
According to the report, "There were improvements in students’ achievement and progress in English, mathematics and science. Notably, the majority of students were attaining above international standards and making better progress than expected. Leadership was strong, and despite the fact that some members of the senior leadership team were in temporary positions, the senior leadership team had driven improvement well."
The current Principal at Layman Scott is Devon Bowen.
Saying that school leaders "had become more focused and successful in driving improvement throughout the school in a relatively short period of time", inspectors recommended that the Ministry of Education "consider confirming the acting senior leadership posts to ensure stability".
With 153 students on roll in Years 7-12, Layman Scott is far smaller than the two high schools on Grand Cayman. The Cayman Brac high school has long set the bar for public school student performance on external exams.
Inspectors recommended that Layman Scott provide greater challenges for the highest achievers and more support for students struggling to learn, and do better at utilising "teachers' non-teaching time".
Because Layman Scott was rated ‘Good’, it will not be inspected again until the next cycle of inspections begins in 2023.
The other 2 government schools to achieve 'Good' ratings are Lighthouse School and John Gray High School.
