The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Cayman Islands schools are not limited to what occurs in the classroom – or via remote learning.
Cayman Islands schools have been trying to manage COVID-19 related absences and associated learning loss during this school year, with varying degrees of success.
Thirty-four local employers, educational establishments, government agencies, and community partners showcased their organisations’ work during Clifton Hunter High School’s Career Fair held in its auditorium 29 April.
Year 11 students at Clifton Hunter significantly outperformed students at John Gray on 2021 external exams, following a period of 2 years where John Gray had nearly closed the gap in test scores.
After a spike in test scores in 2020, Year 11 exam results for Cayman Islands public high schools in 2021 regressed to previous levels, with only Clifton Hunter beating its marks from 2019.
Teaching in the Cayman Islands during the COVID-19 pandemic has been, in a word, ‘exhausting’. Many of the country’s teachers say their current workloads are simply not sustainable, according to school inspectors’ reports.
Students from nine schools across Grand Cayman converged on Clifton Hunter High School to participate in the fourth annual CHHS Mathematics Competition.
Effective leadership, clear focus and flexible approaches have enabled Clifton Hunter High School to address issues that have arisen from COVID-19, such as increased emotional issues in students and staff absences.
The Cayman Islands’ three public secondary schools held commencement ceremonies over the past few weeks for the graduating Class of 2021.
“For the first time in the history of our school, 70 percent of the graduating class have attained at least a level two pass in the CXC examinations,” said Clifton Hunter Principal Richard Wildman.
